It’s not uncommon these days to see some form of fandom mashed to the tune of a charity.

What do I mean? Well, I’m sure you’ve seen many a “Cosplay for a Cause” articles.

Fandoms are a wonderful way to find common ground within your community to help rally others for a local cause. From Heroic Inner Kids to Extra Life to the famous, The 501st Legion. You don’t have to be a big name organization to help out your local cause, so long as you are starting with a solid idea.

So, how would one go about mixing and matching the right fandom with a current cause?

Consider this, say you’re a No Kill Animal Shelter that happens to be near the limit on housing space for animals. Keeping in mind, the objective here is to spread the word about finding more foster homes and other local rescues with temporary housing. So, you look to the fandom of Doctor Who. What do these two things have in common?

What do these two things have in common?

Don’t worry, take a moment to think about it. There’s no wrong answer, but remember our focus is finding more fosters.

.. .. … … … Did you come up with anything?

… … Does wandering deep space with, ‘someone’, ring a bell?

No worries, I’ll tell you just what was I getting at pairing animals with Doctor Who. Besides, the alien pet aspect.

The theme: “Time Traveling with Your Next Companion”.

See what I did there?

By using the scheme of time traveling companionship, you can arrange an entire event to the tune of Doctor Who. In flyers or over social media, your call to action is for fans of Doctor Who is to come out and find “their companion” at your event. From there, you can recruit helpers from Cosplay groups to local comic shops or gaming storefronts to join in the fun of putting on your event. Get a friend or a staff member to help coordinate the event.

Be sure to check with your State’s Ordinance for possible permits needed for holding any sort of outdoor or indoor events! While your cause may be great, it would kinda dampen the mood if its shutdown mid-fun.

See? Nothing to it, but  a little thought and some crafty…albeit cheesy, theme creation and you’re off to a memorable cause.
